Our mission is to mobilize and support churches to promote healing and recovery from substance use issues
Our Process:
We aim to equip Christian communities in NC to support and empower people affected by substance use issues. We will do this through a three-fold process:
Our Approach:
Churches have a long history of engaging in health promotion activities for their members and local communities. While community resources for supporting individuals with substance issues now include a variety of options – from medication-assisted treatment to harm reduction to recovery support groups – little is known about the what faith communities need as they care for those affected by substance use issues.
This study seeks to better understand what clergy and church leaders need as churches respond to opioid use issues and substance use issues more broadly.
FAITH, SUBSTANCE USE ISSUES,
& THE NEED
Opioid and substance use issues present major public health, economic and social welfare challenges to North Carolinians.
THE URGENCY
Our Team:
In an effort to foster collaboration between healthcare and faith communities, this project brings three groups together across Duke University. The Theology, Medicine, and Culture Initiative alongside the Clergy Health Initiative bridge the Divinity School and the world of healthcare, while the Ormond Center bridges congregations to their communities through storytelling and community development initiatives. All of this work is possible thanks to Duke Population Health Sciences and funding from The Duke Endowment.
